Montgomery County is on the fly-path of the Monarch butterfly, which happens to be our state insect.  Our Feed a Caterpillar - Save a Butterfly© program grew out of a national outreach effort to save the Monarch Butterfly.  Today our program is designed to not only to introduce elementary grade students to the native butterflies of Texas, we also provide educational tools and supplies to encourage organic gardening practices and the use of native plants to combat the loss of natural habitat due to urban development. 

This program is available to elementary public schools within Montgomery County, Texas.  Teachers are provided with the information and supplies to set up a pollinator garden at their school.  The garden is designed to serve as an outdoor classroom which not only gives students hands-on experience on what is involved in growing a healthy garden, it also supports the life-cycle of many beneficial insects that are vital to the natural pollination of our agricultural crops.

The program also has a community service module which requires that students to grow specific native plants that are grown from seed during the late fall/winter season then donated for planting in the public lands of Montgomery County as part of our the Bees @ Work© Adopt-a-Spot program.
